Layers
Stays on your device. Every layer is synthesized live by your browser's Web Audio API, not streamed or looped from an audio file. Nothing is uploaded, recorded or sent anywhere. Free, unlimited use, no signup.
Ten sounds, one mixer, always free
White, pink and brown noise are synthesized live in your browser using the Web Audio API, so they never stop and never repeat the way a looped file does. The seven ambience sounds, rain, ocean waves, wind, fan hum, campfire, thunder and birds, are real license-free recordings, trimmed down to a small file and looped seamlessly so there's nothing to stream continuously once they've loaded. Mix any of the ten together, save your own combination, or start from a preset.
It's completely free: unlimited use, no signup, no ads and no premium tier to unlock.
How to use it
- Tap play to start the mix. Brown noise is on by default so you hear sound right away.
- Toggle any of the ten layers on or off and drag each one to set its own volume.
- Try a preset like Deep Focus or Storm for a ready-made starting mix, then adjust from there.
- Set a sleep or focus timer to fade the mix out automatically after 15 to 60 minutes.
The ten sound layers
- White noise. Synthesized live. Equal energy across every frequency, a flat hiss that's good at masking sudden sounds.
- Pink noise. Synthesized live. Softer than white, with less energy at high frequencies, closer to steady rainfall.
- Brown noise. Synthesized live. A deep, low rumble with even less high-frequency content, like a waterfall or strong wind.
- Rain. A real recording, looped seamlessly.
- Ocean waves. A real recording, looped seamlessly.
- Wind. A real recording, looped seamlessly.
- Fan hum. A real recording, looped seamlessly.
- Campfire. A real recording, looped seamlessly.
- Thunder. A real recording, looped seamlessly.
- Birds. A real recording, looped seamlessly.

Why white, pink and brown noise
Each noise color is defined by how its energy is spread across the frequency spectrum. White noise spreads energy evenly, which makes it effective at covering up sudden background sounds like traffic or a slamming door. Pink and brown noise weight that energy toward the lower end, which many people find calmer and less fatiguing to listen to for long stretches, whether they're trying to focus, relax, or fall asleep. None of this is a medical treatment. It's simply a widely used, free way to add a steady, predictable sound to a room that would otherwise be quiet or distracting.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this noise generator really free, or is there a premium tier?
- Yes, it's completely free with no premium tier, no ads and no usage limits. Nothing here requires an account or payment to unlock.
- Do I need to sign up or create an account?
- No. There's no account, login or email required. Open the page, press play, and start mixing.
- What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
- White noise has equal energy across all frequencies and sounds like TV static. Pink noise reduces the higher frequencies for a softer, more natural sound like steady rainfall. Brown noise reduces high frequencies even further for a deep, low rumble like a waterfall or strong wind.
- Is brown noise good for ADHD or focus?
- Many people, including plenty who mention ADHD, say a steady low rumble like brown noise helps them settle in and concentrate. It's not a proven treatment for ADHD, but it's a popular, free way to mask distracting background noise while you work.
- Is it safe to leave this running for hours while I work or sleep?
- Yes. The three noise colors are generated locally in your browser and never stop. The seven ambience recordings are loaded once from a small file and then loop locally with no further network activity. Nothing is streamed continuously and nothing is sent anywhere.
- Does this use real recorded audio files?
- Partly. White, pink and brown noise are synthesized live in your browser using the Web Audio API, not sampled from a file. The seven ambience sounds (rain, ocean waves, wind, fan hum, campfire, thunder and birds) are real, license-free recordings, trimmed down and looped seamlessly so they play locally with no further streaming. We tried synthesizing the ambience sounds first and they didn't sound convincing, so we switched to real recordings for those.
- Will the site work without an internet connection?
- The noise colors keep working offline once the page has loaded, since they're generated on the fly. The ambience recordings need to load once (a few hundred KB each, cached by your browser afterward) before they'll play, so the very first listen of each one needs a connection.
- Can I mix multiple sounds together, like rain and brown noise?
- Yes, all ten layers (white, pink and brown noise, plus rain, ocean waves, wind, fan hum, campfire, thunder and birds) have independent volume controls, so you can blend as many as you want into your own mix.
- Where do the ambience recordings come from?
- They're license-free recordings from Pixabay, credited in full at /audio/noise-generator/CREDITS.md. Pixabay's license allows free commercial use with no attribution required, but we credit the artists anyway since it's appreciated.
