Facebook profile picture size: upload 720x720, shown at 170x170

Facebook's profile picture is one of the few sizes where the number you see and the number you should upload differ a lot. It is displayed at 170 by 170 pixels on desktop and 128 by 128 on phones, Facebook asks for a minimum of 320 by 320, and the full-size view opens something larger than either. A 720 by 720 square covers all of them without being resized harshly, which is why it is the default above.

The picture is displayed as a circle, so a square file with the face centred is what you want. The tool crops any photo to a square at the position you choose, or pads it so nothing is trimmed, and writes a JPG Facebook accepts straight away. The 851 by 315 cover photo is in the same picker.

How to resize a photo for a Facebook profile picture

  1. Drop the photo above. Use the original, not a copy that was sent through Messenger or WhatsApp, which compresses it.
  2. Keep 720x720 selected. For a portrait where the face is high in the frame, set Keep this part to Top; for a normal head-and-shoulders photo, Centre is right.
  3. Check the preview row: imagine a circle inside the square and make sure the face sits inside it. Switch the crop position if it does not.
  4. Download, then on Facebook open your profile, tap the camera on the picture, and choose the file. Facebook's crop screen will already show the whole square; confirm without zooming.

The cover photo and the mobile trim

The cover photo is 851x315 and is shown at full width on desktop but trimmed to the middle on phones, where it renders at 640x360. Anything at the far left or right of the cover disappears for mobile visitors, which is most of them. Place text and faces in the central 640 pixels and use the edges for background. Pick Cover photo above and Keep this part to choose which band of a taller photo becomes the banner.

A source under 320 pixels will be enlarged and the row says so. For a cleaner result from an old or small photo, run it through the AI image upscaler first, on your device, then crop it to a square here.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Facebook profile picture?
Facebook displays it at 170 by 170 pixels on desktop and 128 by 128 on phones, asks for an upload of at least 320 by 320, and stores a larger copy for the full-size view. Upload a 720 by 720 square and every size Facebook makes from it is sharp. Smaller uploads are enlarged and look soft in the full-size view.
Why is my profile picture blurry on Facebook?
Two common causes. The upload was under 320 pixels and got enlarged, or the photo was huge and Facebook's resize plus compression did it roughly. A 720x720 JPG from this page avoids both: it is above the minimum, small enough that Facebook barely touches it, and already square so there is no crop step.
Is the Facebook profile picture a circle?
It is uploaded as a square and displayed as a circle almost everywhere. Keep the face in the middle third so the circle does not clip it; the Centre crop position does that for a normal portrait. Corners of the square are never seen.
What size is the Facebook cover photo?
851 by 315 pixels for a personal profile. Facebook shows it at 820x312 on desktop and 640x360 on phones, which means the sides are trimmed on mobile. Keep anything important inside the middle 640 pixels. The Cover photo option above produces 851x315 from any image.
Will Facebook keep the PNG I upload?
Profile pictures are converted to JPEG either way. PNG is only worth it for a logo with hard edges on a Page, and even then Facebook re-encodes it. Upload JPEG at the quality this tool picks and the result is the same with a faster upload.
Is my photo uploaded to this site?
No. Nothing is uploaded here: the crop runs in your browser, and the file goes from your device to Facebook only when you choose to post it. There is no account here, no watermark, and nothing stored.
