AVIF to JPG Converter

Turn AVIF images into JPG files that older apps, editors and upload forms can open. Free, no signup, and nothing is uploaded: files never leave your device.

AVIF to JPG

JPG quality90

Higher keeps more detail and makes a larger file. 90 suits most photos.

#ffffff

JPG has no transparency, so see-through areas are filled with this colour.

Your images are never uploaded. Every file is decoded and saved inside this tab; nothing is sent, stored or shared. Free, unlimited, no signup, no watermark.

Convert AVIF to JPG in your browser

AVIF is the newest of the common image formats. It was published in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media and is built on the AV1 video codec, which lets it describe a photo in noticeably fewer bytes than JPG or WebP. Image hosts and content delivery networks now hand it out by default, so a picture saved from a website is increasingly an .avif file.

Support outside the browser is still thin. Many photo viewers, editors, messaging apps and upload forms do not open AVIF at all. This page converts it to JPG using the AVIF decoder already inside your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later all have one), so there is nothing to install and nothing is uploaded.

Free, unlimited, no signup, no watermark.

Why convert AVIF to JPG

  • The image viewer or editor on your computer shows an error or a blank preview for the .avif file.
  • A website, form or marketplace accepts JPG and PNG only.
  • You are sending the picture to people who should be able to open it on any device without thinking about formats.
  • You need to drop the image into a document, a presentation or an email where AVIF is not recognised.

AVIF to JPG: quality and file size

AVIF reaches its small size with heavy, clever compression, and JPG then compresses the decoded picture again with a much older method. At the default quality of 90 the JPG holds on to what the AVIF showed. Smooth gradients such as skies are where JPG gives way first, so raise the quality if you see banding or blocks there.

The JPG will almost always be larger than the AVIF, often by a wide margin, since you are trading the efficient format for the compatible one. AVIF can also carry 10 bit and HDR colour. The JPG written here is a standard 8 bit image, so that extra range is not carried over.

What happens to transparency from AVIF to JPG

AVIF supports transparency and JPG does not. Transparent pixels are painted with the background colour before the JPG is saved, white by default, and you can change it under the tool. Opaque AVIF photos, which is most of them, are not affected by the setting. Use AVIF to PNG when the transparent background has to survive.

AVIF to JPG batch limits and very large images

Up to 50 files can be queued, at up to 50 MB each, and they are converted in turn. An AVIF image sequence, the animated form of the format, is reduced to its first frame and the row tells you. Images keep their full pixel size up to 16,384 a side. Browsers with a smaller canvas limit, chiefly iPhone and iPad at about 16.7 megapixels, get a reduced copy with the new dimensions shown. A browser too old to decode AVIF reports that on the row instead of failing silently.

Your images stay on your device

No AVIF decoder is downloaded and no file is sent out: your browser opens the image with its own code and this page asks it for a JPG. The picture exists only on your device before, during and after the conversion.

AVIF to JPG questions

How do I open an AVIF file as a JPG?
Drop the .avif file on the panel above. Your browser decodes it and the page saves the result as a JPG that any viewer, editor or upload form will accept. It takes a moment per image and nothing has to be installed.
Is anything uploaded when I convert AVIF to JPG?
No. The decoding is done by the browser you are using and the JPG is produced in the same tab. There is no server step, so the image cannot be stored or seen by anyone else.
Why will my AVIF not convert?
The usual reason is an old browser. AVIF needs Chrome 85, Firefox 93, Edge 121, or Safari 16 or later; anything older cannot read the file and the row says so. Update the browser or open this page in a current one. A second cause is a damaged or incomplete download, which shows as a file that could not be opened.
How much bigger is the JPG than the AVIF?
It depends on the picture and the quality you choose, but a JPG that looks the same commonly needs two or more times the bytes. Lower the quality slider to bring the size down, and compare the before and after sizes shown for each file.
What happens to HDR or 10 bit AVIF images?
They are saved as ordinary 8 bit JPG files. The picture is kept, but the extended brightness and colour range that an HDR screen would show from the AVIF is not part of the JPG.
Can I convert several AVIF files in one go?
Yes. Queue up to 50 files, each no larger than 50 MB, and they are converted one by one. A file that fails shows its own message and the rest carry on. Save them individually or use Download all.
What does the background colour setting do for AVIF?
It only matters for AVIF images with transparent areas. JPG cannot keep them, so they are filled with the colour you pick, white unless you change it. For a normal photo the setting has no effect.
