Convert WebP to PNG in your browser

WebP is the image format Google released in 2010 to make web pages lighter. It can be lossy like a JPG or lossless like a PNG, and it can carry transparency, so sites now serve it for almost everything. Save a picture from a web page and there is a good chance a .webp file lands in your downloads folder.

Every current browser displays WebP, but plenty of other software still does not: older editors, some design and office apps, and many upload forms. PNG opens in all of them. Drop the WebP files above and your browser decodes each one and writes it back out as a PNG, with nothing uploaded along the way.

Free, unlimited, no signup, no watermark.

Why convert WebP to PNG

  • You saved a logo, icon or sticker with a transparent background and need it in a format your editor or slide deck accepts without losing the cut-out.
  • An older version of Photoshop (before 23.2) or another editor refuses to open the file.
  • You want to edit and re-save the image several times without adding a new layer of compression damage on each save.
  • A form or a print service lists PNG and JPG as the only accepted types.

WebP to PNG: quality and file size

PNG is lossless, so the conversion itself changes nothing: every pixel in the PNG is the pixel the WebP decoded to. What it cannot do is bring back detail a lossy WebP already threw away. The picture will look identical to the WebP, no better and no worse. There is no quality slider on this page because PNG has no quality setting.

The file does get bigger, often several times bigger for a photograph, because PNG stores every pixel exactly while lossy WebP stores an approximation. For flat graphics such as logos, screenshots and diagrams the growth is much smaller. If you need a small file and the image has no transparency, WebP to JPG is the better pair.

What happens to transparency from WebP to PNG

Transparency is kept. PNG has a full alpha channel, so a WebP with a transparent or semi-transparent background comes out with exactly the same see-through areas, soft edges included. No background colour is added, which is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG for logos and cut-outs.

WebP to PNG batch limits and very large images

Add up to 50 files per batch, each up to 50 MB; they are processed one at a time. An animated WebP is not kept as an animation: PNG is a still format here, so only the first frame is converted and the row says so. Images are kept at full size up to 16,384 pixels a side. Where a browser cannot hold a canvas that large, mainly on iPhone and iPad above about 16.7 megapixels, the image is reduced to fit and the row states the new dimensions.

Your images stay on your device

Images saved from the web are often screenshots of private chats, purchased artwork or client assets. This converter does not send them anywhere. The WebP is read and the PNG is written inside this browser tab, and no server sees either file.

WebP to PNG questions

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Both formats have an alpha channel and the conversion copies it across unchanged, so a transparent logo stays transparent and soft edges stay soft. Nothing is filled in behind the image.
Will the PNG look better than the WebP?
No, it will look the same. PNG adds no loss of its own, but it cannot restore detail that a lossy WebP discarded when it was made. What you gain is a file that opens everywhere and can be re-saved without degrading further.
Why is my PNG so much larger than the WebP?
PNG stores each pixel exactly, while a lossy WebP stores a compact approximation. For photographs that can mean a PNG several times the size. Logos and screenshots grow far less. If file size matters and there is no transparency to keep, convert to JPG instead.
What happens to an animated WebP?
Only the first frame is converted, and the row for that file tells you so. This page produces still PNG images and does not write animated PNG or GIF files.
Is the WebP file uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser already knows how to read WebP and how to write PNG, so the whole job is done on your device. Nothing is uploaded and there is nothing for us to keep.
Can I convert a whole folder of WebP files to PNG?
Select or drop up to 50 files at once, each up to 50 MB. Each one gets its own row and download button, and Download all saves the set one after another. Your browser may ask once for permission to save multiple files. Run a second batch for anything beyond that.
Why did a site give me a WebP when I saved a PNG or JPG?
Many sites convert their images to WebP on the fly because it loads faster, whatever the address in the page looks like. The file your browser received really is a WebP. Converting it here gives you a true PNG file, not just a renamed extension.
