Convert AVIF to PNG in your browser
AVIF files are small because the format compresses hard, and that makes them ideal for delivery and awkward for work. Design tools, older editors, game engines and document software frequently cannot import an .avif, and re-saving a lossy file again and again slowly wears it down. PNG is the opposite kind of format: bulky, lossless, and readable by practically everything.
Use this page when you want an AVIF as a working file. Drop the images above and your browser decodes each one and stores the exact decoded pixels in a PNG, transparency included. The conversion happens on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Why convert AVIF to PNG
- You need to edit the image in software that does not import AVIF, and you do not want JPG artefacts added on top.
- The AVIF has a transparent background, such as a product cut-out or an interface asset, and it has to stay transparent.
- The image is a screenshot, chart or illustration with sharp edges and text, which PNG keeps crisp and JPG smears.
- You want one lossless master copy to export other sizes and formats from later.
AVIF to PNG: quality and file size
Converting to PNG adds no loss. The PNG contains precisely what the AVIF decodes to, so the two look the same on screen. Whatever the AVIF encoder smoothed away when the file was made stays smoothed away; PNG simply stops the damage from going any further. There is no quality control on this page because PNG does not have one.
Be ready for a much larger file. AVIF is among the most compact formats in use and PNG among the least, so a photographic AVIF of a few hundred kilobytes can become a PNG of several megabytes. The PNG is written with 8 bits per channel, which means the wider range of a 10 bit or HDR AVIF is not preserved.
What happens to transparency from AVIF to PNG
Transparency passes straight through. AVIF and PNG both carry a full alpha channel, so transparent and partly transparent pixels arrive in the PNG unchanged and no fill colour is applied. This is the pair to choose over AVIF to JPG whenever the background matters.
AVIF to PNG batch limits and very large images
Each batch takes up to 50 files of up to 50 MB apiece, handled one at a time because a large PNG encode is memory hungry. Animated AVIF sequences are not kept: you get the first frame as a still PNG, and the row says so. Full resolution is kept up to 16,384 pixels a side when the browser can hold it. On iPhone and iPad, where the limit is about 16.7 megapixels, a bigger image is reduced and the row shows the size it was reduced to. The page needs a browser that can decode AVIF, and tells you on the row when yours cannot.
Your images stay on your device
Unreleased designs, client artwork and product shots are the typical files here. They stay with you: the browser decodes the AVIF and writes the PNG locally, and the page makes no request that contains your image.
AVIF to PNG questions
- Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?
- Yes. The alpha channel is copied into the PNG as it is, including soft, partly transparent edges. Nothing is flattened onto a background colour.
- Is AVIF to PNG lossless?
- The conversion step is: the PNG stores the decoded AVIF pixel for pixel. It does not undo the compression the AVIF already went through, so think of the PNG as a perfect copy of what the AVIF shows, not of the original the AVIF was made from.
- Why is the PNG many times the size of the AVIF?
- AVIF describes the picture approximately in very few bytes, and PNG records every pixel exactly. For photographs the gap is large, often ten times or more. Illustrations and screenshots with flat colour compress far better as PNG. Choose AVIF to JPG instead when a small file matters more than exact pixels.
- Are my AVIF images uploaded?
- No. This is a page that works on your own device. The file is opened by your browser and saved as a PNG in the same tab, with no upload and no account.
- Which browsers can convert AVIF here?
- Any that can display AVIF: Chrome 85 or later, Firefox 93 or later, Edge 121 or later, and Safari 16 or later. In an older browser the file is listed with a message saying AVIF cannot be opened.
- How many AVIF files can I convert to PNG at once?
- 50 per batch, with a cap of 50 MB on each file. They run one after another, each with its own status, so one bad file never blocks the others. There is no limit on how many batches you run.
- What happens to an animated AVIF?
- The first frame is saved as a still PNG and the row for that file says the animation was not kept. Animated PNG output is not offered.
